Onion Sambhar
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup tur dal
- 1 cup madras onions or 3 medium sized onion, sliced
- 1 cup tamarind juice
- A pinch of turmeric powder
- A pinch of asafoetida
- 1 tsp curry leaves
- 1 tsp coriander leaves
- 1/4 tsp salt
For Roasting
- 1/2 tsp chana dal
- 1 tsp coriander seeds
- 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 3 red chilies
- Grind to a paste
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 tomato
- 1 tsp coriander leaves
- 1 tsp freshly grated coconut
For Seasoning
- 1/2 tsp ghee or oil
- 1/2 tsp urad dal
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
Method
- Roast the dal and pressure cook, along with the required quantity of water.
- Roast all the ingredients given under roasting and powder it.
- Heat oil in a pan and fry the seasoning ingredients.
- Stir in the onion slices and fry till tender.
- Add tamarind juice, turmeric powder, asafoetida, curry and coriander leaves, salt, roasted powder, ground paste and the cooked dal. Mix the contents thoroughly and cook for 5 minutes.
- Serve hot with snacks.
